Matilda is the massive 13 metre high ( 42 feet 8 inches or 1,300 cm ) kangaroo in Australia. Although she is quite large, she is not listed for one of the Big Things in Australia. She was built especially for a Commonwealth Games.
Matilda was first put on display on September 30th 1982. Matilda had a moving head, rotating ears and an extremely well-known wink. She was built around a forklift. She did a lap of honour at the stadium, winking at several people, including the Duke of Edinburgh. Once Matilda’s pouch opened, children representing joey kangaroos ran out to small trampolines, which had been set up in the middle of the stadium.
The massive kangaroo got moved to Wet’n’Wild Water World after the 1982 Commonwealth games. Unfortunately, 25 years later, the winking star lay in pieces out the back of the water park. In 2011, the Kybong Matilda fuel station bought her and gave her a bit of a clean-up. Her refurbishment included repainting, replacement of steelworks, fibreglass repairs, and automation technology that will allow her to blink.
Nowdays, she is still happily sitting on her perch, outside Kybong’s service station.
